Homewood Board of Trustees Votes Against Rezoning

HOMEWOOD, Ill. – March 9, 2021 —South Suburbs for Greenspace over Concrete (SSGOC) is pleased with the Homewood Board of Trustees’ vote against this rezoning.  The trustees have listened to the many residents who endured disdain, threats, and apathy from village officials to fight for the public good.

The rezoning process began after the Homewood Board of Trustees voted to approve a settlement which agreed to being the rezoning process of the former Calumet Country Club to light industrial. The first Planning and Zoning Commission (PZC) hearing on the matter was February 11, 2021. Five weeks later, on March 9, 2021, the Board of Trustees voted against the rezoning, as recommended unanimously by the PZC.

This vote against the application to rezone is a testament to work, research, and care the people of Southland, including residents of Homewood, Hazel Crest, East Hazel Crest, Flossmoor, Glenwood, and beyond. These Southland residents have worked unceasingly for the good of our collective community. Furthermore, this vote is a testament to the strong leadership that has been seen from officials and candidates from all over the Southland who have had the courage to speak against this potential development.

SSGOC will continue to work with residents and the villages of Homewood and Hazel Crest to ensure that this property will be used for something that benefits the entire Southland community. This is our home, and SSGOC will continue to fight to protect it.

SSGOC’s “Stand With Our Community” rally, which immediately preceded the event, allowed residents, who were unable to give their comments last week, because of the final hearing’s weekday morning start time, or because they were not called on over Zoom, to have their voices heard, asking the village to stand with the Planning and Zoning Commissioners and the rest of the Southland community, including Hazel Crest officials, against this development.
